Officer and lr. Orme his maximum as Assistant District Officer. the former would draw £630 a year, while Mr. Orme, when acting as District Officer, would draw £780; i.e. kr. Ross would draw 150 a year less than a junior officer in the some department acting for

him.

6.

It is certain that the next officer who succeeds Mr. Ross at Taipo will be a sterling-paid cadet: but, whereas Mr. Ross cannot hope for more than 2530 a year (and will then have been 7 eers in Grade III), the next District Officer will immediately draw £648 and ultimately £768 per annum.

In the above figures 272 a year has been

deducted from the pay of the next District Officer as rental for

quarters.

7.

In these circumstances I venture to ask you to reconsider the recommendation made in my Confidential Despatch of the 13th. December, 1912, that Mr. Ross should be allowed to 12-13 draw the sterling salary of his post, with liberty to revert to a

dollar salary upon subsequent transfer or promotion to a post to which a dollar salary attaches. I may add that Kr. Ross is the last dollar-paid Cadet who can ever occupy the post of District Officer and that therefore no inconvenient precedent will be

created if you approve this recomendation.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

Ammay

Covernor,ac..
